Which Check4Meth Level Do I Need?

The number on the kit is the concentration of methamphetamine residue at which the test triggers a positive result. A lower number is a more sensitive test. The higher the level, the screening test triggers for a higher amount of Methamphetamine present.

New Zealand works to two headline figures. The conservative figure is 1.5 µg/100cm², reflected in NZS 8510:2017, the New Zealand standard for testing and decontaminating methamphetamine-contaminated properties. The health-risk figure is 15 µg/100cm², identified by the 2018 review by the Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor and adopted as the new Government regulation level. Below this level, residue from methamphetamine use presents no identified health risk to occupants. The 5 and 10 µg kits sit between the two.

Buying a house: Recommended, test at 1.5 µg/100cm². You want the most cautious reading available before you go unconditional.

Landlord, routine changeover: many landlords screen at 15 µg/100cm² between tenancies, and use the 1.5 µg/100cm² kit if something about the property gives them cause for concern.

Landlord with a specific concern, or testing your own home: Recommend testing at 1.5 µg/100cm².

Asked to test to a specific level by an insurer, lender or property manager: choose the kit that matches the level they have given you, so your result answers their question.
